Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring Cleaning Tips

April begins tomorrow as the month of March marches on out of here. Can you believe that we are a quarter of the way through 2016? This means it is time to spring-clean your home and/or business – and we want to help. While we’re not going to come over with a mop (wink, wink), we have a list to help you get the most benefit out of your cleaning hours.

  • Change filters. Your home likely has a few filters that need changed, for example the air conditioner and refrigerator’s water dispenser. Replacing old filters helps appliances to run more efficiently, resulting in lower energy usage. Clean filters that cannot be replaced, including those for small appliances like vacuum cleaners.
  • Vacuum vents. Over time, dust, crumbs and pet hair find their way into vents; remove and scrub vent covers, then vacuum down into the vents. Or consider a professional cleaning. Cleaning the vents will help to control dust in the future and help cool rooms more effectively.
  • Clean windows. Cleaning windows is not a chore for the faint hearted. But it’s so necessary. This is the time of year to open up the blinds and let in the sunlight and fresh air. Dirty window screens allow more dust into the home, so make sure to clean them. Also, take this time to repair any tears in screens and to caulk around windows if needed. This will also help reduce energy waste.
  • Clean those hidden spots. Homes have several hidden spots that do need to be cleaned periodically. A dirty dryer vent, for example, causes clothes to dry more slowly, therefore wasting energy. It can also be a fire hazard. Another area to clean is the back of the refrigerator, making sure to vacuum the coils. Wipe down or vacuum the back of other appliances, as well.
  • Organize key areas. Any boxes or items that have piled up around heating or cooling units, or weeds and grass around outside units, should be cleaned up in order to allow for proper air flow. This also applies to items placed over air vents.
  • Trim the trees. Yards need attention, too. Make sure that no trees are touching electrical wires. Trim small branches and shrubs away from the house, and call a professional for larger tree-trimming jobs.
  • All things new. If not already done, replace the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Even A/C smoke detectors have a battery backup that should be changed annually. Also, be sure to replace outdated smoke alarms. Check fire extinguishers to see if they need to be replaced, and make sure to have the correct type of extinguishers specific for both the kitchen and garage.

As April arrives, we wish you many days full of sunshine! Finish your energy-boosting spring-cleaning tasks soon, so you can relax and enjoy the summer to come!
